How to Improve on Your Baseball Pitching Velocity

If you want to increase your speed you need to know your present level of fitness. You need to prepare a fitness program. The fitness program should include exercises for explosive power work, flexibility, stability and endurance. Ask a trainer to access you’re throwing procedure so that you can improve on inefficiency and energy leaks. Set up a principle centered program. Principle centered is a program that works on all disciples of pitching. Ask your trainer to keep a test for you on both the conditioning side and throwing mechanics side. Break your throwing division into 4 segments like off season, pre-season, in-season and post-season. When you’re setting up goals for velocity do work on principal centered and physical conditioning.

Try to change your speed. If you want to improve on your velocity you should change speed of your pitches. By changing the speed a 70 mph fastball may appear as 90 mph fastball. From a very young age we use only arm and shoulders to throw a baseball. Because of this, you face a lot of shoulder injuries. You should change your perspective. When the throw needs more velocity try using bigger muscle groups. Learn to pitch from the ground up. Velocity comes from forces added to the ball. These forces come from momentum in your lift leg and your push off the ground. You must try to transfer these forces into the ball.

If young pitchers lift their leg they fall towards the target. This causes poor velocity and arm injury. Timing and efficiency of weigh transfer, during delivery, is the essence of velocity. This is where the velocity lives. The most important thing to increase velocity is to work on torque in the core. The core is the area above the knees to below the chest. This area has the strongest muscles in the body. So you should use this part to increase velocity. If you do not work on this area, then shoulder and elbow will be forced to hold the torque needed to generate velocity.

Try using pull perspective instead of throwing. Pull perspective is the amount of weight you are pulling. The more the better. The best way to work on pull perspective is by thinking that you are not holding the ball but a towel or resistance tubing. Proper momentum is very important to transfer good velocity. If you leave any momentum in your body, then you have left some velocity behind. If you face any injury while playing it can be recovered quickly if you follow a balanced alkaline based diet. These are green vegetables which help restore the PH levels in your system. Diet is very important to recovery. These are just some of the tips for developing efficient and effective velocity, without sacrificing the body in return.

Training to Increase Throwing Velocity

I’m often asked how to help players to throw better or harder. My private lessons usually involve this aspect of training. My advice in this regard is the same:

1) First, improve throwing mechanics. Throwing properly by itself can improve velocity.

2) Train the body core in particular for strength and power.

As users of my throwing program know, the arm contributes 53% of the power generated while making a throw. The other 47% comes from the trunk. In other words, it’s almost a 50/50 proposition! Train the core (hips, abdomen, lower back) for both strength and power.

3) Increase flexibility. One study demonstrated that doing this alone will increase throwing velocity 2-3 mph. Don’t neglect this vital aspect of conditioning!

4) Begin a Specific Resistance Training Program for throwing with weighted baseballs or softballs.

As you might guess, most of the above can be done simultaneously. Skill work (mechanics) should be done separately from any conditioning work, except flexibility. In spite of the recent CDC report stating that stretching before performance doesn’t reduce injury, it still is important for ball players to be flexible. It facilitates correct mechanics & performance.

One excellent way to train the body core is via medicine balls. If you don’t have a medicine ball, use a basketball, which weighs about 2 lbs. The following is a good basic medicine ball workout for the body core, appropriate for all ages/ability levels.

[NOTE: To view illustrations of each of the folliwng drills, go to this link: www.baseballfit.com/baseball-throwing-velocity.htm]

Body Core Power Development

All exercises: 2 sets of 10 reps. A rep is a throw and catch.

1) TWO HAND SIDE TOSS

Purpose: Enhance rotational mechanics

Grasping ball with both hands and arms extended, rotate
hips and throw ball forcefully against wall. Catch ball and
perform from other side of body.

Variations: instead of facing wall, turn sideways to make the
throw. Do from both sides of body. Also, make throws one-handed.

2) TWO HAND OVERHEAD THROW

Purpose: Improve explosive power in throwing activities.

Grasp ball with both hands fully extended overhead. Keeping
feet flat, forcefully throw ball against wall (or to partner).

Variations:  step forward while throwing (alternate legs);
make throw from kneeling position.

3) TWO HAND CHEST PASS

Purpose: Improves total body transmission of power

Thrower performs chest passes against wall, forcefully
extending both arms to propel ball. Ball is received with
both arms fully extended, bringing ball back to chest to
make return pass.

Variations: make throws with one arm; perform while
moving laterally up and down length of wall.

4) REVERSE SCOOP TOSS, BOUNCE & CATCH

Purpose: Improve total body power and reactive strength

Grasp ball with both hands. Squat down and swing ball back
between legs, then fully extend body and throw ball behind head.
Throw for height and distance. Immediately after throwing, player turns and runs after ball, attempting to catch it before the second bounce. Repeat for appropriate number of reps.

The Kettlebell Snatch – Improving the Baseball Pitcher’s Throwing Power With a Single Exercise!

Strength training and conditioning for all athletes is the most important ingredient for success. Today’s baseball player is no different. As a pitcher you must have a sound strength and conditioning program in place to endure the length of the season and reduce the risk of injury. I have included a single lift below that all baseball pitchers should master and incorporate into their personal program in order to compete with the best!

As a strength and conditioning specialist if I had to name one single lift that would be the best strength training exercise for baseball pitchers it would be the overhead kettlebell snatch. This particular exercise is so effective that you would have immediate improvement from one season to the next. Mastering this exercise provides the baseball pitcher with tremendous core strength, extraordinary shoulder stability, and the development of throwing power that will shock you more than your competitors! This lift can be done with one kettlebell or two bells. For the purpose of this article I am referring to the single bell lift. To perform this lift you must have an understanding of two prior kettlebell lifts.

You must first know how to do the single arm kettlebell swing. After you master the single arm swing then you can incorporate the kettlebell high pull. Finally, after you master the high pull you can follow through the lift by executing the overhead snatch. To perform the overhead kettlebell snatch you must pull the kettlebell from a vertical swinging motion from between your legs. In one single powerful movement you must explosively extend your hips and knees and mimic the pulling back of a bow (like a bow and arrow) with the kettlebell. The bell should maintain straight alignment with your fist and forearm (no wobbling). As you get the bell up to the peak height and lateral to your head then you will simply want to punch your palm the sky. As you punch your palm to the sky make sure that you lock your shoulder and elbow into place with the bell smoothly transitioning over the back of your forearm.

As a pitcher you must condition your body for the purpose of both strength and muscular endurance. Just like pitching you must be conditioned to perform the same task over and over again. This is why the kettlebell snatch is so effective! Train hard and finish the drill my friend.

The Kettlebell + The Baseball Pitcher = Success!

As you know pitching involves a lot of technique that incorporates a lot more than just throwing the ball with your arm. Your entire body has to be working as a solid unit to create the maximum amount of force in order to blow the ball by a batter! Because of the physical exertion that is required with pitching you must make certain that your body is properly trained and conditioned in order to endure the taxing feat of throwing the ball hard over and over again.

As a strength and conditioning specialist I will tell you that there is no better friend to the baseball pitcher than the ancient kettlebell. Kettlebell training for the baseball pitcher is a definite way for a player to gain the edge on the competition. If you have a strength and conditioning program for baseball then you have got to include the kettlebell into your current program or change from what you are already doing. I will tell you that if you aren’t willing to change then you will not experience the true benefit of this ancient strength training device. Kettlebells have been around for over three centuries and have been used by the world’s greatest strongmen and athletes. If you don’t consider utilizing this tool to increase your pitching performance then you are doing yourself a disservice! Executing some of the more basic lifts with the kettlebell such as swings and snatches are also great for promoting further shoulder stability and strength which is a necessity for a pitcher.

Take the time to endure the learning curve of kettlebell training. If you haven’t already done it then you need to invest in your own bell as soon as you finish reading this article. Feel free to access my other articles on how you can start!

The Kettlebell – The Way For the Baseball Pitcher to Develop a Cannon For an Arm!

If you are a pitcher that is really in tune with your throwing technique then you understand that there are many more bodily mechanics involved with throwing than just using your arm. Pitching the baseball takes both skill and power and training with kettlebells is no different. You see strength training for baseball is not that much different than strength training for football, hockey, basketball, or soccer. The skills and traits of speed, agility, power, and strength all have to be present with every sport.

For this article I will address the development of strength and power through kettlebell training. First of all, training with the iron bell is tremendous for shoulder strength and stability. As a pitcher this happens to be a very important thing for you. Executing base kettlebell lifts such as the double-arm swings, single-arm swings, and overhead snatches are tremendous for helping you to develop true physical power by building a powerful core, hips, legs, and an arm to deliver that needed strikeout! Don’t waste time looking for other miracle methods. Base lifts that involve multiple joint movements and stimulate your body’s nervous system will help you to achieve that optimum level of performance. Kettlebells fit this mold perfectly!
