Speed and Power Baseball

Baseball Training and Conditioning

"SPEED AND POWER ARE THE NAME OF THE GAME!"

Why are SPEED and POWER so important in baseball training? Because they make you a prospect!
Speed and Power Baseball Training
What's the first thing you will do at almost any upper-level baseball tryout? That's right, you guessed it... run the 60-yd. dash. Often times, how fast you run the 60 will determine if the rest of your tryout will be watched or if you will just be going through the motions.

I've been to some tryouts where players were not invited to the later sessions if their speed didn't measure up. Sad, but true! As the saying goes, "Speed never slumps." If you can run, the powers that be are willing to give you a chance because speed is considered the least teachable of the baseball tools. Speed is the one tool in baseball that applies to both offense and defense.

Now, onto the next set of skills--hitting and throwing. You can be a contact-making machine at the plate and you might not get a second look if the balls you hit aren't making it out of the infield. However, if you show some bat speed and power at the plate by driving the ball to the wall... and occasionally out of the park, the minor flaws in your swing are easily overlooked as things that can be corrected with instruction.

The same holds true with arm strength. Show some zip on the ball and that little control problem can be "fixed." If you have a good live quick arm and your ball has life, then congratulations, you've become a blip on the radar!

Is all of this fair? I don't know, but put yourself in a scout's or coach's shoes. You are looking for tools. Tools to build a ball player with. And SPEED and POWER are a great place to start. By the way, the five tools in baseball are speed, arm strength, defense, hitting ability, and hitting for power.

Yes, baseball is a skill-related game. But once you get competent in the fundamentals of the four skill areas (running, throwing, fielding, hitting) you need to do something that makes you stand out from everyone else.

That's why SPEED and POWER are the name of the game... and your Baseball Training should revolve around them.
